The Book of Romans is actually a letter that was written thousands of years ago by a man named Paul.  Paul was a devout Jewish man who was ardent in his opposition to these people who called themselves “Christians.”  One day, on his way to a place called Damascus, Paul had a divine vision of Jesus Christ.  He converted to the very belief system he had tried to destroy.  He later wrote most of what is known as the New Testament.

The New Testament is a group of books that were written by followers of Jesus Christ.  They include the 4 Gospels, The Book of Acts(history of the 1st century church), The Epistles (or letters) and finally the Book of Revelations.

Paul wrote most of the epistles.  The epistles are letters to different churches that Paul had established or helped to establish.  The Book of Romans is one of those letters.  Paul wrote it to the church in Rome who at that time, were suffering great persecutions under the emperor.  The Book of Romans is the greatest book in the New Testament as it explains in detail not only how to become a Christian, but why.

The “Roman Road” is a group of verses taken from the Book of Romans explaining the gift and the steps of salvation.

I outline them here for you in the New American Standard Bible version.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

No one is immune to sin.  Every last man, woman and child has failed to measure up to God’s standard of conduct.

“For the wages of sin is death…” Romans 6:23(a)

The penalty of our sin and rebellion is eternal separation from God.

“…but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 (b)

Thankfully, God has provided us with a way out of the horrible predicament we are in.  He has offered us the gift of life with Him through His son Jesus.  There is nothing we can do to earn this gift.  It is freely given to us…all we need to do is accept it.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

Again, there’s nothing we can do to earn Christ’s love.  It was already given before we ever knew what hit us.

“for WHOEVER WILL CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.” Romans 10:13

Whoever means whoever.  Pimps, whores, druggies, child molesters, liars, gossips, gays, straights, white, black, hispanic, hypocrites, and faithful church attenders.  It doesn’t matter who you are, what nationality you are, what type of sin you have committed.  If you call upon His name He will save you.

“If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved;

For with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” Romans 10:9, 10.

There you have it in a nutshell.  If you believe in your heart that Jesus died for your sins and confess out loud that Jesus is Lord, you will be saved.

If you would like to receive the free gift that we’ve been talking about here, but are unsure of how to pray or what to say let me tell you that simplicity and honesty are best.

The prayer below is simply a guideline.  Use your own heartfelt words as you feel led to.

Jesus,

I am a sinner.  I believe that You are who You say You are and that You died for my sins.  I confess out loud that You are Lord, and as Lord You are the ruler of my life from here on out.  Amen.

If you have prayed this prayer, your next step is to join a local church and begin reading the Bible so that you can learn how to live a life that is pleasing to God.
